FINANCE SPECIALIST I

Job Summary

The Finance Specialist I will perform basic accounting functions to support the City in posting, reconciliation, and maintenance of City-wide financial transactions. The Finance Specialist I is responsible for processing invoices, financial statements, documents and/or reports for internal and external accounts. The Finance Specialist I may specialize and/or assist with procurement and travel requests, audit inquiries, budget preparation and maintenance and provide technical support to vendors and other City departments.

Minimum Job Requirements

• Associate degree in Finance, Accounting or related field.
• At least two years of related experience.
• A valid driver’s license.

Essential Job Functions

• Classifies, codes, posts, and balances financial entries, documents, and records while processing general journal entries, payments, and department-related vouchers.
• Audits financial documents for accuracy and compliance with City policies and state/federal statutes, researching and reconciling discrepancies in accounts and bank statements.
• Assists in maintaining accounting files, conducting asset inventory audits, and balancing financial statements and reports.
• May assist in preparing financial reports, statements, presentations, and training, as well as handling cash receipts, deposit slips, and cash control records.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Of

• Principles and practices of basic accounting and clerical methods.
• Governmental or non-profit accounting
• Laws and regulations pertaining to financial operations.

Skills In

• Providing a high level of external and internal customer service.
• Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Maintaining sustained attention to detail and working under the pressure of rigid deadlines.
• Working independently with general instruction, performing a variety of functions, and managing multiple projects at one time.
• Understanding, interpreting and being able to explain department office policies, rules and practices.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

Work is performed in a standard office environment with low to moderate noise level. Subject to sitting for an extended period of time, standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, and lifting and putting away such items as records and office supplies of moderate weight of up to 40 pounds. Working with a wide variety of people, experiencing different levels of emotions.
