This position is assigned to the Maine Revenue Services Income/Estate Tax Division Business Audit Unit.  The mission of the audit staff is to assist MRS in the administration of State tax laws by conducting compliance audits and providing education and customer service for taxpayers to improve current and long-term compliance with Maine tax law.

Work includes performing multi-tax audits of individuals, business, and corporations under the supervision and oversight of the senior personnel to determine tax liability, taxpayer compliance, and employing judicial processes to enforce state tax laws.  Audit work may require in and out of state travel.

This is an 18-month classification which, upon successful completion and demonstration of certain specified competencies, may result in reclassification to Senior Revenue Agent.


Typical Duties:

  • Audits and verifies moderately complex tax-related transactions, contracts, leases, and financial statements of individuals, business, and corporations to determine taxpayer compliance.
  • Prepares audit reports to report findings of independent audit determinations and establish a basis for additional state assessments when appropriate.
  • Analyzes a wide range of standard and automated accounting and record-keeping systems to formulate appropriate audit tests.
  • Explains state tax laws and regulations to inform taxpayers and taxpayer representatives of proper procedures to be used in determining tax liabilities.
  • Compiles, reviews, and summarizes evidence relating to tax compliance to present or defend state tax assessments at reconsideration hearings and appeals before a court of law.
  • Reviews and analyzes tax information, tax returns, taxpayer histories and prior audit results to identify audit candidates and issues.


Minimum Qualifications: 

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited educational institution -OR- four (4) years of equivalent post-secondary education, training, and/or professional level experience in business administration, accounting, information technology and/or auditing.
