Job Purpose
You will conduct reviews of tax returns for the Sales Tax Family and provide taxpayer education and assistance to encourage a clear path to voluntary compliance.  

Job Duties 
  • Conduct reviews of accounts in the Sales Tax Family to verify accuracy of returns/payments and ensure compliance with SC laws and SCDOR established procedures/policies
  • Provide quality customer service by effectively researching and communicating information regarding interpretation and application of various tax laws, technical/delinquent tax, or account adjustments 
  • Obtain and maintain knowledge of agency tax systems and the impact for tax areas and/or taxpayers
As an entry-level tax examiner, you will regularly receive guidance and input from the immediate supervisor as well as senior Tax Examiners in the day-to-day administration of your duties. This position is a part of a career development plan which offers pay increases and advancement opportunities.   
Minimum and Additional Requirements
Requires one of the following:
  1. A high school diploma and experience in accounting, auditing, or bookkeeping
  2. A bachelor’s degree with multiple accounting courses 
  • Academic degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • College transcript required for consideration where applicable. Transcripts may be attached to the application or emailed to Employment.SCDOR@dor.sc.gov

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualification are not required but are considered when setting a starting salary within the hiring range.

  • Highly Preferred: associate’s degree or higher and experience in a business or tax related area
  • Working knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices
  • Basic knowledge of SC tax laws and forms and on-line systems
  • Effective written and oral communication skills with internal and external customers
  • Use customer service skills in line with SCDOR standards to provide professional and courteous service
